The Igbo United Sisters of America (IUSA) was founded in March 2019 by a visionary group of 24 remarkable women, proudly recognized as our Founding Members.

These exceptional women, all of Igbo heritage and residing in the United States, came together with a shared dream—to build a strong, united sisterhood dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people, empowering one another, and extending compassion to those in need both in the United States and Nigeria.

The journey of IUSA began with a sincere desire to make a meaningful difference. The founding members were initially united under the Ugonwanne International Women’s Association, an organization committed to humanitarian service and supporting the less privileged. While they shared common goals of service and community development, differences in vision and direction eventually emerged. Rather than allowing those differences to divide them, these courageous women embraced change and chose to establish an organization built on unity, transparency, respect, and a renewed commitment to their shared ideals.

Their first step was the formation of Sisters of Peace, a name that reflected their desire for harmony, reconciliation, and mutual support. As the organization continued to grow in strength, purpose, and membership, it became evident that a new identity was needed—one that truly represented its mission and the unique bond shared by Igbo women living in the diaspora. This transformation gave birth to the Igbo United Sisters of America (IUSA), a name that proudly reflects who we are and what we stand for.

The name Igbo United Sisters is more than just a title—it is a declaration of our identity. It represents a family of empowered Igbo women joined together by love, mutual respect, shared heritage, and a collective commitment to uplifting one another. Regardless of our professions, backgrounds, or personal achievements, we believe that our greatest strength lies in our unity. We celebrate our diversity while embracing the common values that define us as daughters of Igbo land.

Our guiding slogan, “Onulu ube nwanne agbana oso”—translated as “He who hears the cry of his brother (or sister) must not run away”—captures the very heart of our organization. This timeless Igbo proverb reminds us that true sisterhood is demonstrated through compassion, empathy, responsibility, and action. It inspires every member to respond with kindness whenever another person is in need and to remain steadfast in supporting one another during both joyful and difficult seasons of life.

Since its establishment, IUSA has grown into a respected and impactful organization with members across several states in the United States. The organization continues to expand its reach while remaining faithful to its founding principles. Through educational initiatives, charitable outreach, mentorship, cultural celebrations, leadership development, and community service, IUSA has touched countless lives and strengthened the bonds among Igbo women in the diaspora.

Our commitment to humanitarian service extends beyond our membership. IUSA has consistently supported vulnerable individuals and communities through charitable projects benefiting orphanages, schools for the blind, widows, families facing hardship, food banks, and other humanitarian causes both in Nigeria and within the United States. These efforts reflect our belief that genuine leadership is measured not by titles but by service to humanity.
